How do I join?
Attend South Carroll High School in Sykesville, Maryland. Then Sign up for Robotics in club signups or contact Ms. Anne Wolff and/or Mr. Sean Lee (SCHS Mathematics Teacher)
Do I need any experience?
Nope. The Robotics Club is willing to, excited to, and capable of teaching you most of the skills you will need to succeed. A willingness to learn and work with a team is all you need.
Will I need to do math?
No, if you don’t want to (other than some simple counting). Though if you would like, there is plenty of algebra/trigonometry/calculus that can help create and program these highly competitive robots.
Is this like Battle-Bots?
In the sense that there are multiple robots competing to complete tasks under time constraints, yes. But our robots don’t intentionally attack others, our goal is to complete the tasks quickly to score points. (Tasks include stacking cubes, launching balls, pressing buttons, lifting our robot into the air, etc.)
What is the time commitment? How often does the club meet?
We have two to three non-mandatory meetings afterschool each week until 4:30 for most of the competition season. During the three weeks prior to a competitive event, we usually begin to meet every day until 6:30 (again these meetings aren’t mandatory, but attendance is appreciated).
What are the competitions?
At the beginning of each season, FIRST Tech Challenge releases a video and documents displaying the seasons challenge (Example: Powerplay (2022-2023 Season) We have about a school semester to build a robot that is able to compete. Competitions usually take place at the beginning of December to end of January.
How much does it cost to join?
There is no cost to join.
What will I learn?
Your learning is dependent on your involvement. Our members learn anything from engineering notebook formatting to building with aluminum to programming in Java. We enjoy the freedom, and support, to learn such a wide range of engineering and life skills under the guidance of electrical and mechanical engineers.
How can I get involved?
There’s a variety of positions you can fill as a new member. Our teams consist of programmers, builders, engineering notebook managers, photographers, and artists. The competition is multifaceted so there’s always something you can do to help prepare.
Can I join if I’m doing fall sports?
Of course! We have many members who are on the fall Cross Country and Soccer teams who find it easy to join a team once their sport is over.
How will joining this club help me in the future?
As our mentors love to say, joining this club will help you develop your “engineering toolbox” (essential engineering skills). Many members receive the equivalent of a couple college credits of learning on our teams. This club will look incredible on college applications and will teach you valuable life communication skills at the same time.
Do I have to want to be an engineer to join the club?
No, though many of our members do aspire to be engineers. The robotics competition is fun for all as there are many positions in which non-engineers will thrive.
Where are the meetings?
Meetings take place in the SCHS testing center (old auditorium).
Who are the adult mentors?
Do I need to bring anything?
No, new members aren’t required to bring anything to the meetings.
Where will my parents pick me up?
After meetings your parents can pick you up from the school’s main lobby or the side of the school.
Are there commitments outside of the after-school meetings?
Yes. All members are required to attend the weekend competitions (minimum of 2 events every year). These events usually take all day. Locations are TBD. We usually compete at two Qualification events and one state championship event every year. For family that is interested in watching the competitions live, our competitions may be watched via the FIRST Chesapeake Twitch Channel, Dates and Times are TBD.
